Το Λονδίνο απλώθηκε γύρω από το ποτάμι και το εμπόριο του απλώθηκε σε όλον τον κόσμο, μέσα από τα νερά του. Οι βιομηχανίες αναπτύχθηκαν στις όχθες του και όσο το εμπόριο αυξανόταν τόσο μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη για αποβάθρες υπήρχε. Για αυτό και η πόλη είναι γεμάτη dock και wharf.

Τα πλοία όλο και μεγάλωναν και όταν πλέον δεν χωρούσαν στο ποτάμι και το κέντρο της πόλης, αναζητήθηκαν άλλα κοντινά μεγαλύτερα λιμάνια. Και το Λονδίνο όλο και απλωνόταν στις όχθες του Τάμεση.

Τι καλύτερο λοιπόν από μια παραποτάμια εξερεύνηση! Αυτό το βιβλίο καλύπτει περίπου 30 χιλιόμετρα από κάθε πλευρά. Πιθανότατα δεν θα περπατήσεις τόσο, αλλά θα σε βοηθήσει να διαλέξεις ποιο κομμάτι θέλεις να δεις. Και όσο δεν περπατήσεις θα το διαβάσεις, πολύ αναλυτικά με όμορφα σχέδια, έτσι ώστε να έχεις μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα.

Ο David Fathers που το έχει δημιουργήσει συστήνεται ως εικονογράφος, συγγραφέας, δημιουργός χαρτών και άλλα πολλά. Έχει και άλλους οδηγούς για το Λονδίνο οι οποίοι φαίνονται πολύ πολύ ενδιαφέροντες. Μια λίστα μπορείς να δεις εδώ. Εγώ την επόμενη φορά θα δοκίμαζα το Regent’s Canal, μέσα από το οποίο ήταν και το πρώτο του βιβλίο που εκδόθηκε το 2012. Μου αρέσει πολύ που ο συγγραφέας αναζητά καινούριους τρόπους να ερμηνεύσει αυτήν τη χιλιοπερπατημένη πόλη. Όπως λέει:

I am constantly looking for new ways to explore and explain the metropolis in my own particular way.

Η συλλογή των ταξιδιωτικών με έχει φέρει σε επαφή με το μονοπάτι κάποιων εμπνευσμένων και πολύ δημιουργικών ανθρώπων και ο David Fathers είναι σίγουρα ένας από αυτούς.

London spread around the river and its trade spread across the world through its waters. Industries developed along its banks and as trade grew, so did the need for more docks and wharfs. That’s why the city is full of them.

The ships kept growing in size and when they could no longer fit in the river at the city center, larger nearby ports were created.

London continued expanding along the banks of the Thames and nowadays exploring it by the river, is a great idea. This book covers approximately 30 kilometers on each side. You probably won’t walk that far, but it will definitely help you choose which part you want to explore. As for the parts you will not walk, you can read in great detail, with beautiful illustrations.

David Fathers, the creator of this guide, is an illustrator, author, mapmaker and much more. He also has created many other interesting guides for London. You can find a list here.
